A 4-month trip on NYC, roaming all boroughs with my bicycle and graphic gear on the backpack, in order to experience each area of the city, carrying out an exhaustive daily diary (300 sketches).

The Diary was shaped, by means of “on site” drawing, interacting with people, sounds, weather, and smells. The other sketches can be seen at www.hugobrc.wordpress.com

1 NYC From New Whitneys Museum terrace

The views from here are amazing. I forced an eye-fish perspective in order to be able to sketch all the urban landscape. At the end I used a pentel brush-pen to highlight some dark values.

2 Meatpacking District from the High Line

love these brick buildings with high windows and huge overhangs, highlighted with the dark values of the brush pen. Cars and people add scale to the sketch and also help to transmit NYC atmosphere.

3 TWA Terminal / Brooklyn

TWA terminal was another image from New York that was travelling in my memory for years. That morning, that organic shape was presented to me under a perfect light to paint.

The horizontal shape of the building made me force the perspective beyond my vision cone, resulting in a very wide frame.

The morning light I felt back then, invited to watercolor the drawing. Whitish forms stood out over that blue sky scenario. Paradoxically, these surfaces, that most contributed to define the building mass, were exactly the ones I would not paint (the “white”);

I stop for a while to observe and assimilate those magical surfaces I DO NOT wanted to cover. Afterwards, grey shadows were drawn to serve this particular voids (whites) providing them shape and volume. Several other grey tone levels were then combined in order to articulate all the different plans of the interior domes, in between the reflections and transparencies of the big elliptical window.

4 Christmas Concert / Guggenheim Museum.

Musicians used the famous ramp to perform, taking advantage of the building features.
