Архитектор Бен ван Беркель родился в 1957 в Утрехте, закончил Академию Геррита Ритвельда в Амстердаме и Архитектурную школу Архитектурной Ассоциации в Лондоне c почетным дипломом в 1987 году. Известный теоретик и практик в области архитектуры и цифрового дизайна, первые идеи к проектам Бен ван Беркель фиксирует «по старинке», доверяя карандашу или ручке и бумаге:

«Я постоянно делаю скетчи. Мне проще нарисовать, чем объяснить идеи и концепты словами. Слова всегда разочаровывают, когда пытаешься применить их к архитектуре. Но в то же время и архитектура может разочаровывать, если не знать, какая концепция или идея стоит за ней. Вот почему теория и архитектура должны идти рука об руку. В процессе разработки дизайна, эскизы – изучение вариантов, обмен идеями насчет возможных решений – должны предшествовать словам. Вы можете начать с эскиза от руки, а затем сделать на его основе компьютерный рисунок или цифровую модель, но именно эскиз – самое верное средство, запускающее циркуляцию идей».

Ben van Berkel (1957, Utrecht) studied architecture at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and at the Architectural Association in London, receiving the AA Diploma with Honours in 1987. In 1988 he and Caroline Bos set up an architectural practice in Amsterdam named Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau, In 1998 van Berkel and Bos relaunched their practice as UNStudio, now active also in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Ben van Berkel, well known theorist and practitioner in the field of architecture and digital design, sketches the first ideas for his projects ‘the old way’, trusting pencil or pen on paper:

«I am always sketching. I prefer to sketch as a means of explaining ideas and concepts than to use words alone. Words always disappoint when you connect them to architecture. And by the same token, architecture can also disappoint when you are not provided with an explanation of the ideas and concepts behind the design. This is why theory and architecture always need to go hand in hand. For this reason also sketching during the design process is primarily about communication; studying variants; setting up a dialogue about the various possibilities and solutions. You may start with a sketch and then turn this into a computer drawing, or digital model, but the sketch is primarily used as a tool for communication to circulate ideas».
